The Peaceful Revolution

1986- The year when this country was liberated from the grip of dictatorship through a peaceful revolution. A revolution that urged the sense of freedom to the whole world making the Philippines as the inspiration for the other countries to bring to their own land the sweet breeze of freedom. During those times, Europe was divided by the iron curtain that the communist regime set up to prevent western ideas to enter their land. At that time also, the CPP-NPA, a pro-communism movement; was threatening the regime of Marcos, thus, the former enacted the Presidential Proclamation No. 1081; putting the entire country into Marshall Law.

Even though his intentions were good, Marcos abused the use of Marshall Law by necking the rights of the people (an example of this abuse is the abolishing of the Writ of Habeas Corpuz). The people became very careful of the things that express about the government. If they were to speak against the regime, they would face the inhumane consequences. The fear of death ruled over the people for 20 years of the Marcos regime.

Benigno Simeon ''Ninoy'' Aquino Jr.- The man who sparked the sense of freedom and change to the Filipino People during those dark times of dictatorship. Marcos treated Aquino as threat to his administration and he tried all means to oppress him and make him as one of his allies. When all else failed, and Aquino's declining health, Marcos decided to exile Ninoy to the states where the former stayed for 3 years with his family. During this years, Aquino fueled the minds of the people for change, urging them to fight for what they believe in as he did back in the Philippines. After this, Ninoy decided to go back to his fatherland to continue the fight against the regime.Aquino did return to the country; but he only lived for a few minutes after arriving-He was assassinated.

Aquino's death made the people very furious against the administration. Corazon Aquino, Ninoy's widow, became the representative of the masses against Marcos. She participated in the snap elections that Marcos cheated to win. Due to the threats they've received from the Regime, Juan Ponce Enrile and Gen. Fidel Ramos turned their loyalty from Marcos.
Everything seems to be ready for a civil war, but that didn't happened. Instead a peaceful revolution occurred. A revolution that changed the Philippines we know today.

So as citizens of this country, we should be proud of our people did for the sake of freedom and democracy. We should apply it in our every day lives, and teach it to the future generations to come.
